BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH as well as THE X-MEN

For many collectors, Barry Windsor-Smith may be synonymous with Valiant.  He provided cover illustrations for a wide range of early-era Valiant titles. books like Archer as well as Armstrong #0, Bloodshot #1, Solar #3, as well as X-O Manowar #4 are prime examples of his work.  However, a few of his earlier work at Marvel, particularly working on the X-Men, is similarly iconic.

Lifedeath & Lifedeath II

Barry Windsor-Smith had a few of the most attractive as well as iconic covers of any type of artist during Chris Claremont’s seminal X-Men run.  His very first partnership with Claremont appeared in X-Men #186.

The cover of the book is a traditional Windsor-Smith look as well as features some amazing interior pencils by him as well.  It’s quite wild to believe that this artist is the exact same one who drew the Kirby-inspired cover as well as interiors for X-Men #53 all those years before.

It is worth noting that problem 53 is his very first comic book work.  A CGC 9.8 will set you back about $2,000.  X-Men #198 is a follow-up to his previous X-Men story.  X-Men #198 even takes the unusual step (for the time) of name-dropping the innovative team on the front of the book.  This book is not a key by any type of stretch, however for around $60 for a CGC 9.8, you can get a great-looking cover to add to your collection.

Wolverine as well as Weapon-X

X-Men #212 as well as marvel Comics provides #72 are two books I had my eye on last year.  These are the two books that I regret not jumping on when their costs were much lower.  Both of these titles have seen extremely robust gains in the last six months.  X-Men #212 has one of the very best Wolverine covers of any type of age as well as is part of the Mutant Massacre crossover event.

It is a minor Wolverine key, as it features his very first battle with Sabretooth.  The book is right around $250 currently for a CGC 9.8.  MCP #72 is currently priced as a minor key.  However, this is the very first appearance of the weapon X Program anywhere.  This book is selling for $350 in a CGC 9.8 as well as climbing quickly.

The weapon X story continues all the method as much as problem #84 as well as every problem in the run features Windsor-Smith covers to go together with his interior work on the story.  Of the later issues, MCP #74 as well as MCP #84 function the most iconic covers.  This run had been under the radar up until extremely recently, as well as even still, problem #72 is the one getting the most notice, since of the very first appearance of the weapon X Program. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye on them.

A look to the Future

Barry Windsor-Smith cemented his X-Men tradition with his seminal work on weapon X in marvel Comics Presents.  These books had been under the radar, however I expect them all to continue climbing steadily over the program of the year.

As these books warm up, it’s not unreasonable to believe that other BWS books will likewise begin to get more notice. That’s my opinion, though. What do you guys think? let us understand in the comments!
